FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: IONIA FREE FAIR HEROES DAY COMMITTEE SEARCHING FOR AREA KOREAN VETERANS FOR RECOGNITION Ionia, Mich. – Ionia Free Fair Heroes Day Committee members are looking for area Korean veterans for recognition and awarding the Korean Service Medal or the Korean Defense Service Medal at Heroes Day, Wednesday, July 23 at the 2008 fair. The Heroes Day event was conceived by Doug Clark former manager of the Ionia Free Fair. Bev Clark, current Ionia Free Fair manager, urges anyone who feels that they qualify for either of the Korean awards, should contact their local Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts or American Legion . The Korean awards will commence at 10 a.m. on July 23, at the Governor’s Day Tent located between the Grand River and the Floral Building on the fairgrounds. A light luncheon will be served following the ceremony. Clark said the Free Fair felt it was important to recognize military veterans who served in the Korean Conflict because few ever received the medals. “As many of these veterans are getting along in years, the fair and the community want to acknowledge their sacrifices they made for all of us,” Clark noted. The deadline for nominations is July 1. Korean veterans need not live in Central Michigan or belong to either the VFW or American Legion. However, the Ionia County veteran organizations will assist in preparing the appropriate documentation for the medals. -more- Military service men and women lost in the line of duty will be honored in a riverside memorial service. Recognition of Korean veterans was initiated on Heroes Day at the 2006 Free Fair when 19 Ionia area veterans received medals and last year 75 veterans were honored with service medals.
The Ionia Free Fair Board of Directors designated a special
day to honor members of our armed forces, past and present,
for the well-being of our nation and way of life. The Free
Fair Association started the process by honoring Korean
veterans, considered by many as veterans of the “forgotten
war”, for their individual dedication and commitment. Post Commanders please note the following information below!“HEROES DAY” AT THE IONIA FREE FAIR ON JULY 23RD, 2008 HONORING OUR KOREAN WAR VETERANS
Dear Commander,
In recent years, the Ionia Free Fair Association and the mid Michigan Veterans Organizations have jointly sponsored an event that has paid tribute and recognition for the valiant efforts of our Korean Veterans. Many of them never received their earned service or defense metals. Last year about 80 individuals were identified and certified for the period of time they spent in the Korean Theater. The resulting medal award ceremony was a very touching event that pleased both the veterans and their families. In addition, a special memorial service will be held commemorating our losses in the preceding 12 months. The entire program will be held in the Governor’s Day Tent located between the Floral Building and the Grand River, Ionia Free Fair Grounds at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 The primary reason for our success in identifying the Korean veterans was the cooperation of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts and American Legion in locating them and insuring that the correct documentation was available for determination of the appropriate award. Last year the Portland VFW, the Saranac American Legion, and the Belding VFW assumed the major leadership in certifying the candidates. We want to be sure that all individuals are reached and know that your help is urgently needed. With the overall age and general health of our Korean Veterans, we need to quickly contact all those who are eligible. Following are the names and phone numbers of those persons from the organizations that you should contact with the individuals information that you identify. Saranac American Legion: Ron Boehm (616-642-0075) Portland VFW Post: Jim Huver (616-527-4503) Belding VFW Post: Pam Cain (527-7236). Lyons-Muir VFW Post: Tammy Wakefield (517-566-8747). Please note that the individuals you identify are not required to live in Central Michigan or be a member of the four identified veteran’s organizations. Further information will be available in your local newspaper. Time is important for the necessary planning so your immediate attention is important.
Please also note that the 2008 cut off date for the nominations is July 1, 2008.
Thank you for your cooperation in this very important project.
Sincerely, The 2008 Heroes Day Korean Veterans Recognition Event Committee
